10 questions with Tom Stobbart:

1 What was your first job in retail/placemaking?

My very first job in retail was in Millets as a Saturday job in Hitchin. I loved being part of a team and, as a Scout, being around camping equipment and walking boots was a great place to be in your first job.

2 What’s the best thing about your current job?

The speed at which we are working and improving everything we do. We are building a centre operation and aiming to do it better than anyone else in the country. Having not only the backing of the landlord, Redical, to strive for excellence but the intent, vision and will to identify these issues and deliver on a programme of continued improvement makes coming to work a real joy.

3 Which retailer do you most admire and why?

The smaller ones that expand and the ones that take the risk to grow. We have just had ‘80s Casual Classics join us at The Liberty, it is the brand’s first store in the south, and they have engaged with the centre and instantly become a part of the town and its offer. I love watching this journey happen.

4 What’s the best piece of business advice you have ever received?

I was told to always ask why you are making this decision and what is limiting that decision. Constantly evaluate your goals and make sure the decision you are making aligns with this. Often people make decisions based on money, staff, timings or other operational factors. I am always thinking whether I can change these rules, procedure, policy and, if I can, can I change the outcome and improve the decisions I have to make?

5 What are you most likely to say?

Manage the ‘manageables’.

6 What are you least likely to say?

No.

7 What’s your pet hate?

Handwritten laminated signs!! I just can’t bear them.

8 What would be your luxury item if you were stranded on a desert island and why?

Practically, a good axe! But if by some miracle I had power, it would be a record player and a good vinyl collection. Sitting around listening to old records with my family is one of my favourite pastimes.

9 Who would you want to play you in a movie, and why?

Someone with a good beard who can ride a motorbike. Maybe Ewan McGregor.

10 Describe yourself in three words

Supportive, passionate and driven
